Dark Sky 50 – Spring 2023 Tentatively
The race has been held the first weekend in May traditionally but for 2022 there were numerous schedule conflicts for the race organizer. There is not an exact date scheduled for the 2023 race yet as they are looking at some time in the spring.
For the 2023 ultra-marathon we welcome back all the volunteers who helped staff the communications at each aid station and look forward to seeing some new faces as well. We are seeking race coordinators and will be looking to fill all 13-14 volunteer spots in the upcoming weeks/months. We need at least one licensed amateur radio operator for each location. We can even help out of you need an HT or antenna for your aid-station. Volunteers do not need to be affiliated with our club or belong to any ARES team as some training will be provided.
The 2023 Dark Sky 50 miler on the trails of Pickett State Park and Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area. The course is mostly runnable on single/double track with a couple of jeep road miles thrown in. Runners should expect creek crossings, rolling hills, a little technical terrain, and amazing views! The race takes runners by such landmarks as the Hazard Cave and Natural Bridge at Pickett State Park and John Muir Overlook, Maude’s Crack, Charit Creek Lodge, Slave Falls, Twin Arches, and Gobbler’s Knob in Big South Fork.
Last year the race has gone cupless meaning that the runners will provide their own re-usable cups and water bottles rather than disposable cups.
